Ready For Spring Fieldwork On Jostedalsbreen

by Jacob Yde, April 6, 2021

After all the cancelations of fieldwork in 2020, the JOSTICE team is finally ready for collecting snow and ice thickness data on Jostedalsbreen Ice Cap.

During the period from April 9 to April 28, 2021, JOSTICE scientists will conduct fieldwork for investigating the distribution of snow and ice thicknesses on Jostedalsbreen. The main objectives are to construct a topographic map of the landscape beneath the ice cap and to use the thickness data as input in dynamic ice movement models. The target region of the spring 2021 field campaign will be the higher parts of the ice cap.

Fourteen people will be involved in collecting the data. Due to covid-19 precautions, the field personnel are divided into three teams working at different parts of the ice cap. The data is collected by using snow and ice penetrating radar systems.
